Burglar Sentenced for Assault and Racist Abuse on Police and Hospital Staff

A 20-year-old burglar who launched vicious attacks on officers and hurled racist abuse at hospital staff has been locked up for nearly three years.

“Despicable” Crime Spree Ends Behind Bars

Luke Graham, from Alton, Hampshire, was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison at Leicester Crown Court on Monday. The charges include burglary, indecent exposure, public order offences, theft, and seven counts of assaulting emergency workers.

Chief Constable Rob Nixon slammed Graham’s actions as “despicable” and praised officers for their swift response. He said: “Graham had absolutely no regard for those he targeted during his crime spree. Officers were simply carrying out their duty to protect the public, and the horrific abuse they faced will never be tolerated.”

Crime Spree Caught on Camera

Police kicked off their investigation after a suspicious man was spotted by a doorbell camera in Leicester Forest East on the evening of 19 July last year. Graham was caught entering a porch before stealing a key fob from a car.

Officers quickly circulated descriptions of the suspect and tracked him down. A search uncovered the stolen key fob on his person.

During custody, Graham turned violent, spitting at officers and headbutting a female officer, leaving her with a bruised lip. At hospital, he made racist remarks at staff treating him.

Multiple Offences, Multiple Sentences

  • Burglary dwelling with intent to steal
  • Theft from a motor vehicle
  • Indecent exposure
  • Racially aggravated public order offences
  • Seven counts of assaulting emergency workers

Graham pleaded guilty at his first court appearance last year. He also admitted involvement in five other crimes from the same month.

Detective Constable Stacey Jones revealed: “Graham was on a spree, trying to break into homes and vehicles before officers stopped him. He then became abusive, violent, and racially abusive towards hospital staff while in custody.”

Now behind bars, Graham faces time to reflect on his disgraceful behaviour. Police have made it clear such conduct against emergency workers and the public will never be tolerated.
