Catford Man Locked Up Indefinitely After Stabbing 20-Year-Old Outside His Home
Catford Killer Sentenced to Secure Hospital
Caudel Haughton, 21, from Catford, has been sentenced at the Old Bailey to an indefinite stay in a secure hospital after fatally stabbing 20-year-old Filipe Oliveira in a brutal, unprovoked attack.
Haughton was convicted of manslaughter by diminished responsibility on Friday, February 7, 2025. The court ruled he will stay locked up under the Mental Health Act until doctors say he’s safe to be released.
Unprovoked Attack Outside Filipe’s Home
- On April 15, 2023, Haughton approached Filipe’s doorstep on Norwood Road and stabbed him five times with a flick knife.
- Emergency services rushed to the scene at 6 PM, performing CPR, but tragically Filipe died later that evening.
High-Tech Hunt and Arrest
Police pieced together Haughton’s movements using CCTV, eyewitness tips, and Crimestoppers anonymous calls. They tracked him on buses and trains over 90 minutes, capturing his escape route after the attack.
Five days later, on April 21, 2023, armed British Transport Police officers arrested Haughton at Waterloo Station in a joint sting with the Metropolitan and Dorset Police.
Shocking details later came out revealing Haughton even bragged about the stabbing.
Detective Praises Team, Reassures Public
“My thoughts today are with Filipe’s family and friends, who have waited nearly two years for justice,” said Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command.
“This was an unprovoked attack outside Filipe’s own home. Extensive CCTV footage and witness evidence helped us secure the conviction.”
“Haughton will remain in a secure hospital indefinitely and may spend his life there, ensuring he poses no further risk to the public.”
Knife Crime Crackdown Continues
Haughton’s indefinite hospital order underscores the Met Police’s toughness on knife crime and commitment to taking dangerous offenders off the streets for good.
Authorities will keep monitoring Haughton’s status closely as the public demands safety and justice.
