Drug Dealer Jailed for Raping Woman in Crawley Alleyway
Florin Cotoi, 46, a convicted drug dealer with no fixed address, has been locked up for nine years after being found guilty of raping a 27-year-old woman in Crawley. The chilling attack happened in a dark alley off Three Bridges Road, and Cotoi was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on 29 March 2023.
Attack in Crawley Alleyway
In the early hours of 1 September 2022, the victim asked Cotoi for a cigarette at Memorial Gardens. Instead of a quick smoke, he led her into a secluded alley on Three Bridges Road and carried out the horrific rape. The brave victim escaped and reported the crime to police, triggering a swift investigation.
DNA Evidence Cracks Case
Forensic teams matched DNA found at the scene to Cotoi. When police arrested him, they also discovered clothing matching the victim’s description. Despite his denial of the rape charge, a jury convicted Cotoi and sentenced him to eight years in prison.
Drug Sentence Extended – Total Nine Years Behind Bars
Cotoi’s conviction triggered a previously suspended sentence for possession with intent to supply serious Class A drugs, namely diamorphine and crack cocaine. This added an extra 12 months to his prison term, totalling nine years. He will also be placed indefinitely on the sex offenders register.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery
“The victim showed incredible courage in coming forward,” said Detective Sergeant Iain MacNab. “DNA evidence was vital to identify the suspect and ensure justice was served. We urge the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour.”
