Mum who battered newborn baby to death blocked from appeal

A Buckland woman sentenced to life for viciously killing her 19-day-old baby has been denied the right to appeal. Nicola Brown, 44, was convicted of murdering her newborn son Jake Long in 2014 after a brutal attack left him with horrific injuries.

Brutal murder shocked Buckland

Brown smashed baby Jake’s head with “astonishing force” using a hard object at their home, Winchester Crown Court heard. The tiny tot suffered a fractured skull, brain haemorrhage, bleeding in the eyes, and 17 broken ribs from adult-level squeezing. A prior brain injury likely came from being violently shaken.

No grounds for appeal despite innocence claim

Though Brown has always claimed innocence, the judge rejected her appeal bid due to lack of new evidence. She must serve a minimum of 14-and-a-half years behind bars for the savage attack. She was sentenced on Valentine’s Day last year.

Husband cleared as tensions spilled into public

Jake’s father, forklift driver Jason Brown, 45, was cleared of causing or allowing harm. At the original trial, text messages revealed a volatile, stormy marriage. Neighbours described the couple as unpopular, often loud and unkempt, frequently shouting and swearing in the street.
