Provisional Driver Jailed for Five Years After Horrific E-Bike Crash
A 22-year-old man with just a provisional licence has been locked up for five years after a reckless crash left a cyclist fighting for his life.
The nightmare unfolded just before midnight on 28 July. Police raced to Forest Road, near Humberstone Road, after a red Audi A4 smashed into a man riding an e-bike.
The cyclist, also in his 20s, was rushed to hospital with severe injuries.
Quick-Thinking Cops Crack the Case
Two officers, nearby at the time, spotted the red Audi A4 abandoned at the scene. They had earlier seen the car on Victoria Road East, which helped piece the puzzle together.
Moments later, Rahul Singh showed up at a road closure and confessed he was the driver – despite only holding a provisional licence.
Singh was arrested and breathalysed, revealing he was well over the legal drink-drive limit. CCTV footage caught the Audi overtaking dangerously on the wrong side of the road around a bend just before crashing into the cyclist.
Grim Charges and Heavy Sentence
- Causing serious injury by dangerous driving
- Aggravated vehicle taking
- Driving over the drink-drive limit
- Driving without a proper licence
Singh pleaded guilty to all charges at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on 31 July. Today at Leicester Crown Court, he was sentenced to five years in prison, banned from driving for four and a half years, and must pass an extended driving test before he can hit the road again.
Police Praise Victim’s Family and Vow Tough Justice
“Singh had no alternative but to plead guilty because of the evidence against him,” said Detective Constable Anna Andrew from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
“Extensive CCTV enquiries, phone analysis, and forensic investigation proved his reckless actions caused this horrific collision.”
“Adam, the victim, remains in hospital with severe life-changing injuries. I want to thank his family for their courage and dignity throughout this traumatic ordeal. They have fought tirelessly for justice.”
“We will not tolerate dangerous driving that puts innocent lives at risk. Law-abiding road users deserve to travel safely, and we will continue to bring offenders like Singh to justice.”
