Drunk Driver Ploughs into Toddler After Wrong-Way Dash

Mary Casey, 34, has been slammed with jail time after she ran over her one-year-old great niece while careering the wrong way down a one-way street in Cambridge — all while drunk behind the wheel.

Chaos on Mill Road

The shocking incident unfolded at around 7.10pm on Sunday, 24 July 2022. Casey was driving a grey Nissan Qashqai on Mill Road, Cambridge. Instead of waiting at the red lights, she brazenly overtook four cars and took a deadly wrong turn down a one-way street.

In the car with Casey was her niece, holding the one-year-old on her lap in the front seat. Casey’s two children and another great niece were crammed in the back.

Crash and Carnage

Speeding round a corner past no-entry signs, Casey lost control. She smashed into two parked cars before the passenger tried to save the toddler by placing her on the pavement.

But horrors didn’t end there. As Casey reversed, she tragically clipped the child lying on the pavement.

Ignoring the carnage, Casey then fled the scene, driving the wrong way down St Barnabas Road with her two kids still inside. She finally ground to a halt when the wrecked car became undriveable.

Serious Injuries and Court Sentence

The baby girl was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with critical injuries — a bleed on the brain, fractured skull, and broken ribs. Casey and the other passengers were also treated as a precaution.

Blood tests confirmed Casey was over the legal alcohol limit. At Cambridge Crown Court on 7 February, she pled guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Judge handed Casey a 20-month jail sentence. She was also banned from driving for nearly four years and must pass an extended driving test before hitting the road again.

This grim case is a stark reminder of the devastating effects of drink driving.
