The 12th Duke of Marlborough, Charles James Spencer-Churchill, has been slapped with three counts of intentional strangulation. The 70-year-old aristocrat, linked to Sir Winston Churchill and Princess Diana, faces allegations dating from November 2022 to May 2024.

Shock Strangulation Charges Shake Storied Aristocratic Clan

Known as Jamie to friends and family, Spencer-Churchill was summoned to appear at Oxford Magistrates’ Court this Thursday. His arrest came nearly a year ago on May 13, 2023.

The three alleged non-fatal strangulation incidents all allegedly took place in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, involving the same victim.

From Blenheim Palace to the Dock

  • Spencer-Churchill is heir to one of Britain’s most prestigious dukedoms.
  • He inherited the title in 2014 after the death of his father, the 11th Duke of Marlborough.
  • His family seat, Blenheim Palace, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous as Churchill’s birthplace.

Despite the grand address, Spencer-Churchill does not own or run Blenheim Palace. The Blenheim Palace Heritage Foundation manages the estate independently. They confirmed knowing about the Duke’s legal troubles but declined to comment amid ongoing investigations.

Dark Past and Royal Links

Spencer-Churchill has a well-documented battle with drug addiction. He is distantly related to wartime Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and connected to Princess Diana via the Spencer family line.

The Duke’s family history is stormy, highlighted by a bitter 1994 dispute over control of Blenheim Palace with his heir.

Blenheim’s Glorious Past – and Recent Scandals

Blenheim Palace has hosted monumental events, including a royal reception in 2024 hosted by the King and the 2015 unveiling of a Sir Winston Churchill bust, attended by the then Duchess of Cornwall.

The estate also grabbed headlines in 2019 after a sensational £4.75 million golden toilet was stolen.

The Duke’s representatives have yet to respond to the strangulation charges.
