Eight Prison Officers Arrested in Swaleside Corruption Probe
Police swooped on HMP Swaleside in Kent, arresting eight prison officers suspected of corruption at the high-security jail known for holding dangerous criminals, including murderers.
Raid Follows Earlier Arrests Amid Growing Concerns
Seven officers were arrested last week after another officer’s arrest a month prior set off a major investigation into the prison’s dark underbelly. Sources reveal, “No one knows exactly what it is connected to — but there have been lots of examples of violence and drugs there.”
Located on the Isle of Sheppey, Swaleside has faced scrutiny over rampant violence and smuggling operations. Inmates recently poisoned 25 staff members with the synthetic drug spice, highlighting serious security flaws.
MoJ’s Counter-Corruption Unit Takes Charge
The Ministry of Justice’s counter-corruption unit is leading the inquiry but remains tight-lipped. “It would be inappropriate to comment on a live police investigation,” a spokesperson said. Kent Police confirmed all arrested officers have been released on bail as investigations continue.
Prison Struggles With Violence, Staff Shortages, and Riots
Swaleside has long been labelled “struggling.” A report in December revealed 14 inmate deaths over two years, severe staff shortages, and a heavily restricted prison regime. HM Chief Inspector of Prisons Charlie Taylor blasted the facility: “Swaleside is a prison that continues to struggle and where outcomes still need to improve dramatically.”
The prison has also faced riots, notably a 2016 uprising where 60 inmates seized control of a wing.
Authorities Promise Action on Corruption and Safety
As the probe unfolds, the Ministry of Justice and Kent Police are under pressure to tackle corruption and restore safety to HMP Swaleside for both staff and prisoners.
