Lewisham Man Jailed Over Massive Cigarette Smuggling Haul to Fund Medical Bills
67-Year-Old Caught with 400,000+ Illegal Cigarettes at Heathrow
A 67-year-old Lewisham man got caught red-handed trying to smuggle more than 400,000 undeclared cigarettes into the UK via Heathrow Airport. Vi Van Long arrived from Hanoi, Vietnam, on January 14 carrying a suitcase stuffed with 12 large cling film-wrapped packages. He claimed the packages contained tea, but Border Force officers quickly discovered the truth – 401,140 cigarettes hidden inside.
Nearly £200,000 in Lost Tax Revenue
This illicit cigarette haul would have cost the UK government a whopping £197,868 in unpaid duty fees. Long’s bid to sneak the stash into the country was foiled just in time.
Desperate Measures to Pay for Expensive Medical Care
In court, Long revealed the grim reason behind the smuggling attempt. Tired of waiting on the NHS, he travelled to Vietnam for medical treatment costing £9,000. Needing cash fast, he accepted £5,000 to bring in the cigarettes illegally.
“Someone introduced me to somebody who had a job where I could get £5,000,” Long told Woolwich Crown Court. “I have never committed any crime before; this was the first time.”
Suspended Sentence and Tough Warning
Recorder Jenni Dempster KC handed Long a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months. She warned: “You won’t go to prison today, but if you reoffend within 18 months, you will be brought back here and this sentence will be enforced.”
The court also ordered all seized cigarettes to be forfeited and destroyed.
Health Crisis Driving Smuggling Risk
This case shines a spotlight on the harsh realities faced by those struggling with long NHS waits. For Long, the high cost of private treatment pushed him into breaking the law, risking a prison term to cover his medical bills.
