Parents Warned: Keep Kids Away from Derelict Buildings This Summer!

The Isle of Wight Community Safety Partnership (CSP) is sounding the alarm on the dangers of youngsters sneaking into abandoned or closed buildings this summer. These sites aren’t just empty—they’re ticking time bombs with structural faults and hazardous materials that could cause serious injury or health risks.

Official Crackdown on Unsafe Empty Properties

The CSP’s key players—the council, police, and fire and rescue teams—are teaming up with property owners to lock down these risky sites. But they need YOU to help. The council urges anyone spotting unsecured empty buildings to report them immediately to the empty property officer. Quick action can save lives.

“So Many Safer Alternatives” Says Council

“There are plenty of safe places for children to play and loads of organised activities during the holidays,” said Councillor Barry Abraham, Cabinet member for planning and housing. “Parents should know where their kids are and warn them about the dangers of abandoned and unsecured buildings.”

Fire and Police Warn of Arson and Crime Risks

Howard Watts from Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue warns, “Empty buildings are magnets for arsonists, risking not just themselves but also our emergency crews.”

Superintendent Sarah Jackson of Hampshire Constabulary added, “We urge youngsters to stay out of disused buildings. Neighbours close to empty sites should keep an eye out for suspicious activity. Trespassing isn’t a crime on its own but often leads to vandalism and antisocial behaviour.”

She continued, “When we spot groups of teens at these sites, we’ll advise them to leave safely first.”

See Something? Say Something!

  • If you spot any unsecured empty buildings, call Will Taylor, the council’s empty property officer, on (01983) 821000 ext: 6935.
  • Witness suspicious behaviour? Ring 101 immediately.

Stay safe, Isle of Wight—keep kids clear of danger zones this summer!
