Violence Erupts in Epping as Police Officer Injured Amid Protests

Essex Police have slammed ‘criminal behaviour’ after days of unrest rocked Epping. Multiple suspects have been identified, and one police officer was injured during violent protests outside the Bell Hotel. The chaos follows the arrest of a 38-year-old Ethiopian asylum seeker charged with serious sexual offences.

Protests Sparked by Shocking Sexual Assault Charges

Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, aged 38, was arrested on High Road, Epping, and faces multiple sexual offence charges. These include the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl on 24 September, along with other counts of harassment and inciting sexual activity.

Timeline of Turmoil in Epping

  • Tuesday 8 July: Kebatu arrested after several reports of inappropriate behaviour. Charged with three counts of sexual assault, one count of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity, and harassment without violence.
  • Sunday 13 July: Protest outside Bell Hotel. Two male security guards seriously assaulted at nearby bus stop. Attack investigated as racially aggravated.

Police Fire Back at Violence

Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow: “The people who carried out these crimes do not represent our community. This was criminal behaviour, not protest.”

Superintendent Tim Tubbs: “There is strong feeling locally about the court case. But we cannot allow that to justify criminality. We urge everyone to respect the judicial process and keep our community safe.”
