Man Jailed for Strangling Partner in Brutal Home Attack
Philip Baker, 63, from Erith, has been handed a two-year prison sentence after assaulting and strangling his partner in a terrifying attack that left her fearing for her life.
Shocking Strangulation After Heated Argument
The violent incident happened on March 13. Baker’s partner was resting on the sofa following an argument when he launched an unprovoked attack. He pinned her down, pressed his knee on her chest, and strangled her until she struggled to breathe. This wasn’t the first time Baker had shown violence; back in September, he punched her arm repeatedly, leaving serious bruises.
Judge Slams Baker’s History of Violence
At Woolwich Crown Court, Judge David Miller slammed Baker’s actions. He described the attack as “chilling,” saying, “You used your body weight to pin her down, placed your knee on her chest, and strangled her while she desperately tried to defend herself.” Despite Baker’s denial, he was found guilty after a trial at Bexley Magistrates’ Court.
Violence Runs Deep in Troubled Past
Baker’s violent behaviour isn’t new. He had previously been cautioned for battery against another woman. Judge Miller noted, “You have a good work record, but you clearly have a propensity for violence towards weaker people, particularly women.” Given the seriousness and his history, the judge ruled out a suspended sentence and saw no real hope for rehabilitation.
Police Hope Sentence Sends a Strong Message
Baker had already been in custody after breaching bail. Authorities hope his conviction will serve as a stark warning and highlight the brutal reality of domestic abuse. The victim’s brave 999 call after the attack led to Baker’s arrest, bringing some justice after months of fear.
