Lucy Connolly, wife of a former Tory councillor, faces a nail-biting wait after appealing her 31-month prison sentence. The 41-year-old Northampton mum was locked up for a fiery tweet about migrant hotels that sparked outrage during nationwide unrest.
Shock Tweet Posted Amid National Turmoil
Back in July 2024, while the country was reeling from the tragic stabbing of three girls in Southport, Connolly posted:
“Mass deportation now, set southampton/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fire to all the fing hotels full of the bds for all I care… if that makes me racist, so be it.”
She later admitted to inciting racial hatred. During a hearing via video link from HMP Drake Hall, Connolly said she was “really angry, really upset” and “distressed that those children had died.” She claimed she never intended to incite violence and deleted the tweet after calming down.
Judges Reserve Decision on Appeal
The appeal hearing wrapped this week, but judges have held off on delivering a verdict. There’s no word yet on when the ruling will be handed down.
Her husband, Raymond Connolly — who lost his West Northamptonshire district council seat recently but remains a town councillor — remained hopeful outside court:
“I’m hoping this will come to a positive conclusion.”

Lucy was jailed in October 2024 amid a national probe into hate speech linked to widespread riots. Prosecutors labelled her comments “inflammatory and dangerous,” warning they could spur real-life violence.
