Massive Gas Explosion Levels New Ferry Building in Birkenhead
A huge gas explosion has flattened a building in New Ferry, Birkenhead, sparking panic across Merseyside. The blast happened just after 9pm on Saturday at what’s believed to be a Chinese takeaway shop near a dance studio.
Residents Hear ‘Huge Bang’ Shaking Homes Across Merseyside
People from Birkenhead to Liverpool city centre and Sefton Park reported hearing an enormous bang that shook houses. A plume of smoke soared into the sky, visible as far as Liverpool.
“I could feel the earth shake from the explosion,” said one local. Another added, “It felt like the whole street was rattling.”
Emergency Services Rush In, Train Services Suspended
Merseyside Fire and Rescue confirmed several two-storey buildings collapsed over a 40m by 50m area around Boundary Road and Bebington Road. Fire crews, police, and ambulance teams rushed to the scene.
A nearby pub worker said one of their windows blew in from the force. One man suffered a minor head cut, treated by locals who dashed in with towels and first aid.
Arrowe Park Hospital staff are volunteering to assist with the emergency response.
Dance School Owner ‘Lost for Words’
The owner of the dance studio next door said: “Lost for words. I watched the place grow from nothing to hundreds of us. Hoping everyone is safe.”
Travel Disrupted: Rail Replacement Buses in Operation
Merseyrail has halted train services between Hooton and Rock Ferry. A rail replacement bus service is now running on this stretch. Trains continue to operate up to Hooton.
