Chilling Encounter Revealed in Ashling Murphy Murder Trial
In a gripping Dublin court session, Jenna Stack, a teacher from Tullamore, gave a shocking account of the moments she stumbled upon the murder scene of 23-year-old Irish teacher Ashling Murphy. Ashling was brutally attacked while jogging near Tullamore on January 12, 2022.
Teacher Finds Man Crouched Over Victim
Ms Stack described how, during a run with her friend Aoife along the canal, she spotted a man hunched over someone in the hedge. The man, later identified as suspect Jozef Puska, ordered her to “get away” before she and her friend fled to raise the alarm.
“I heard a lot of rustling and noise,” Ms Stack told the court. “At first, I thought someone had fallen off a bike. Then I saw the man in a navy bomber padded jacket crouched over a person.”
Victim Struggling For Life In Harrowing Scene
Ms Stack recounted the terrifying moment seeing Ashling struggling and kicking on the ground, as if crying for help. The man shouted aggressively at Ms Stack to leave, adding to the fear and tension at the scene.
Defence Claims Suspect Tried to Help Victim
The prosecution highlighted Ms Stack’s eyewitness ID of Puska as key evidence. But defence barrister Michael Bowman argued Puska might have been trying to help Ashling, not harm her. Puska has pleaded “not guilty” through a Slovakian interpreter.
Crucial Evidence and Court Challenges
- Aerial photos taken by Detective Sgt Paul Curran the day after the attack were submitted.
- The court examined the transport of Ashling Murphy to hospital and expert pathology reports.
- Puska reportedly accepted the pathologist’s findings on cause of death.
As the trial continues, the court faces the tough task of weighing eyewitness testimony against defence claims. Justice for Ashling Murphy hangs in the balance as tensions run high in this tragic case.
