Tragic Stabbing Death of Beloved Grandad at East Street Market
The family of 77-year-old Hilkiah McLeggan – known as Mac or Lloyde to his loved ones – have paid a moving tribute after his tragic death following a stabbing at East Street Market, Walworth, on Sunday, November 10.
Heartfelt Family Tribute to ‘Warm and Generous’ Mac
Mr McLeggan sadly died from serious injuries after an assault just after 10:40am on East Street, SE17. Devastated relatives described him as a kind, hard-working man who carried on working well past retirement because he loved helping others and cherished his friends and colleagues.
“Mac was a warm, kind, and generous man who would do anything for his friends and family. He was a great support to many and always offered help without hesitation,” the family said.
“We are crushed by this terrible event and thank everyone who has expressed condolences. A special memorial was set up at the market he loved for decades.”
“We also thank the brave bystanders who helped on Remembrance Sunday and caught the suspect, preventing more heartbreak. Thanks to the LAS and police for their ongoing support during this devastating time.”

Suspect Charged and Held in Custody
Police have charged a man in connection with the fatal stabbing. He has been remanded in custody as the investigation continues.
