Massive Blaze Hits Silvertown Apartment Block
A major fire ripped through a seven-storey residential building on Wards Wharf Approach, Silvertown this afternoon. The inferno erupted around 2:55 PM in a ground-floor flat, sparking a huge emergency response.
Firefighters Battle Blazing Flames
London Fire Brigade (LFB) scrambled multiple fire engines to the scene. Brave firefighters are battling the intense blaze, working hard to contain it and stop the fire spreading further inside the building.
Meanwhile, paramedics from the London Ambulance Service are on site treating residents. So far, no casualties have been confirmed, but several people are being checked for smoke inhalation.
Evacuations Underway as Police Seal Off Area
Residents of the block and surrounding buildings have been evacuated as a precaution. The Metropolitan Police have cordoned off Wards Wharf Approach and nearby streets to give emergency crews free rein.
Locals are urged to steer clear of the area and keep windows and doors shut to avoid inhaling thick smoke now billowing from the building.
Eyewitnesses Describe Chaotic Scene
Neighbours reported alarms blaring and thick smoke pouring from the ground-floor flat before firefighters arrived. Sarah Evans, living in a nearby block, said: “I saw smoke pouring out of the windows, and people were rushing out of the building. The fire brigade was here very quickly, and they’ve been working hard to get it under control.”
Tom Richards added: “There was a lot of panic initially, but the firefighters were so professional and calm. It’s frightening to see something like this so close to home.”
Ongoing Investigation and Traffic Chaos
Officials are yet to determine the fire’s cause. London Fire Brigade investigators will inspect the scene once it is deemed safe. They are considering all possibilities, including electrical faults or accidental factors.
Road closures remain in place on Wards Wharf Approach, causing heavy traffic delays in Silvertown. Transport for London urges commuters to find alternative routes while emergency crews continue their work.
