Blaze Breaks Out at Salford High-Rise – 88 Flats Evacuated

A fierce fire ripped through a tenth-floor flat at Mulberry Court, Salford early on 27 December 2022. Firefighters raced to the scene after the first call came in at 8.10am, swiftly containing the blaze and keeping it from spreading.

Quick Fire Crew Response Saves the Day

Ben Levy, Area Manager at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, revealed the scale of the operation.

“At the height of the response, five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were battling the intense flames using water jets and breathing apparatus. The fire was contained to the tenth floor, and 88 flats were evacuated as a precaution.

“Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Our fire safety officer worked closely with Salix Homes and confirmed the building performed as expected. Residents have started returning home, and we’re supporting them fully.

“Given the severity and high-rise nature of the fire, I’m proud of our firefighters’ swift and safe response. An investigation into the cause is ongoing.”

Salix Homes on High Alert as Safety Measures Kick In

Sue Sutton, Chief Executive at Salix Homes, stressed that safety came first throughout the incident.

“The fire broke shortly after 8am in a tenth-floor flat. Fire crews extinguished it swiftly, and the building was safely evacuated with no injuries.

“We set up emergency refuges at neighbouring Sycamore Court and our Weaste offices for affected residents. The fire alarm system activated perfectly in the affected area as designed, alongside all our fire safety measures.

“Following the Stay Safe policy, alarms only sound in the fire zone, but firefighters evacuated the whole building as a precaution. Some residents returned by 10.30am, while others remain supported as investigations continue.”

Residents Reassured as Fire Investigation Continues

Both fire crews and Salix Homes are working closely to uncover the fire’s cause. Meanwhile, emergency services and housing officials remain on hand to reassure and assist residents impacted by the blaze.
