Ex-Northampton Town FC Chair David Cardoza and Four Others Face Court Over £10.75 Million Fraud

Five Set to Face Fraud Charges

The former chairman of Northampton Town FC, David Cardoza, along with four others linked to the club’s redevelopment, are due in court tomorrow (16 January). They face serious charges over an alleged £10.75 million theft and fraud scandal.

Who’s Who in the Dock?

  • David Cardoza, 54, from Eastbourne
  • Anthony Cardoza, 80, David’s father from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire
  • Howard Grossman, 63, property developer from Bushey, Hertfordshire
  • Marcus Grossman, 37, also from Bushey
  • Simon Patnick, 54, from Stanmore, north London

Allegations Laid Bare

All five face conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation charges, dating from September 2013 to April 2015. Prosecutors claim they:

  • Misled Northampton Borough Council about a £10.75m loan meant for stadium and hotel development.
  • Misappropriated £8.75m, funnelled to 1st Land Limited, owned by Howard Grossman.

David Cardoza also faces additional charges for transferring criminal property — specifically, moving £166,000 via bank transfer from the football club’s accounts.

Money Laundering and Property Transfers

Howard Grossman is accused of several transfers of criminal property, including:

  • £650,000 moved from County Homes (Herts) Ltd to his son Hayden Grossman.
  • £10,000 and £15,000 transferred from 1st Land Limited to Simon Patnick and Patnick’s company Simpa Investments Limited.

Additional transfers totalling £20,000 from Marcus Grossman’s accounts to Patnick are suspected to be linked to criminal proceeds. Patnick faces charges of acquiring criminal property worth £61,800 connected to transfers from the Grossmans.

Operation Tuckhill: The Long Road to Justice

The case comes from Operation Tuckhill, a lengthy nine-year probe by Northamptonshire Police into the disappearance of council funds loaned to Northampton Town FC. The £10.75 million was earmarked for upgrading Sixfields Stadium and building an adjoining hotel.

The investigation started after 2015 raids on the stadium and has uncovered:

  • Over 1,000 witness statements
  • More than 4,700 exhibits recorded
  • Additional financial crimes beyond missing council money

High Stakes Court Hearing

Tomorrow’s hearing at Northampton Magistrates’ Court will be the first time suspects linked to this massive financial scandal face formal charges. The proceedings promise to shed light on one of Northamptonshire’s most high-profile fraud investigations.

Background: Money Vanished, Questions Raised

The £10.75m loan vanished by late 2015 without trace, sparking shock and a police hunt that has captured headlines for years. The funds were supposed to fund vital upgrades for the stadium and hotel, making the betrayal even starker.

What’s Next?

The accused men will appear in court to answer these serious allegations. As the case unfolds, it will reveal more about the scale and complexity of this multi-million-pound fraud.
