Sheffield Student Robbery Gang Busted: Four Jail Terms Totaling Over Eight Years
Four criminals who preyed on students in Sheffield city centre have been locked up for a combined eight years and more. This ruthless gang, made up of three men and one woman, faced charges ranging from robbery and fraud to handling stolen goods and carrying a bladed weapon.
Victims Lured, Assaulted, and Stripped of Cash
Garfield Nelson (59), Rebecca Kerrigan (32), Lupin Ntungi (41), and Stephen Green (37) all pleaded guilty at Sheffield Crown Court. Their offences spanned three incidents between July and October 2019. They targeted students on nights out, “befriending” them before robbing their valuables.
Detective Constable Yvonne Fairbrother revealed: “On 22 September, Kerrigan approached a young man, struck up a conversation, then led him to a cash machine. She coerced him into withdrawing £60 before stealing both the cash and his bank card.”
“When the victim tried to retrieve his card, Ntungi struck him with a walking stick and the pair fled.”
Kerrigan then withdrew a staggering £800 from the victim’s account at multiple city locations, with CCTV catching her and Ntungi together. The second incident saw the gang assault another student on Cavendish Street and force him to a cash machine.
DC Fairbrother said: “While Kerrigan distracted the victim, Nelson and Green followed closely. When he tried to escape, they punched him and stole cash, a ring, chain, and bracelet.”
“Thankfully, the student wasn’t seriously hurt but was left shaken.”
Justice Served: Gang Members Sent to Prison
Officer Fairbrother condemned the gang’s cold tactics: “They shamelessly targeted young people, forcing them into handing over money. They are dangerous and rightly behind bars.”

- Rebecca Kerrigan: 4 years 4 months for handling stolen goods, fraud, and robbery
- Lupin Ntungi: 2 years for robbery
