Four-Year-Old Killed by Antique Garden Roller in Tragic Accident
A four-year-old boy, Maldwyn ‘Gwern’ Evans, has died after being flung onto a concrete patio by a heavy antique garden roller at his family home in the quiet Welsh village of Tynreithin. The heartbreaking incident happened on June 20, leaving the community in shock.
Playful Boy’s Curiosity Turns Fatal
Gwern, described by his family as a “keen little farmer,” was playing in the garden when the tragedy struck. Coroner Peter Brunton ruled the death accidental, confirming that “there was no human control” involved in the event.
“The loss of a child is the most devastating thing that can happen to a parent. It is every parent’s nightmare to outlive your children. I can only offer you my most profound condolences and sympathies,” said Coroner Brunton during the inquest.
Emergency Services Battle to Save Young Life
Emergency teams, including the Welsh Air Ambulance, were called at 4.30pm. Despite frantic efforts, Gwern suffered a traumatic cardiac arrest from severe brain injuries and could not be revived.
Family Mourns and Honors Gwern’s Memory
Gwern’s mother, Sian Eleri Evans, explained how she heard a thud from the kitchen and rushed outside to find her son injured. Though Gwern had never played with the Victorian cast-iron garden roller before, she suspects his imagination led him to mimic farm machinery he had seen on the family farm.
The garden roller, weighing 50 to 60 kilograms and serving as a garden ornament for two years, had rolled downhill. Gwern had likely pushed it from behind, causing it to gain speed and flip onto him, resulting in his fatal head injury.
Mrs Evans shared the deep grief felt by the family: “The loss is unimaginable, not only for myself, his father, and sister but to my wider family and friends.”
In tribute, the family is fundraising for Welsh Air Ambulance and to create a school farm in Gwern’s memory.
“On the balance of probabilities, Gwern had indeed been able to push the roller from behind using the handle like anyone else would. His pluckiness therefore may have played a hand in this,” stated Coroner Brunton.
The local community remains devastated by the tragic loss of a bright and determined little boy.
