Met Police Officer Sacked Over Shocking WhatsApp Messages
Serving Cop Booted for Offensive Chat
A serving Metropolitan Police officer has been swiftly dismissed without notice after being found guilty of gross misconduct. PC Dean Murphy, from the North East Command Unit, was caught sharing offensive and discriminatory messages in a WhatsApp group chat.
Two former officers involved in the chat, PC Rebecca King and PC Kevin Odongo, would have faced the same fate had they still been on the force. All three failed to challenge each other’s inappropriate behaviour.
WhatsApp Group Chat Sparks Outrage
The offensive communications, exchanged between September 2020 and September 2021, came to light during an unrelated investigation involving another ex-officer. The messages breached police professional standards, including conduct, respect, and courtesy.
Murphy was placed on restricted duties before being dismissed, while King and Odongo resigned during the probe.
Chief Supt Condemns ‘Highly Offensive’ Conduct
“These messages were highly offensive, and I am appalled and bewildered that these officers found them amusing or gratifying,” said Chief Superintendent Dan Card. “Those who hold such views are not fit to serve in this organisation, and it is right that the panel concluded they should be dismissed immediately.”
Permanent Ban from Police Service
All three officers will be added to the College of Policing’s barred list, permanently banned from working with any police force, local policing bodies, or related organisations, including the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
This case underlines the Metropolitan Police’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct and its pledge to maintain integrity across the force.
