Shock Attack Outside Synagogue: Two Dead, Three Injured
Counter Terrorism chief Laurence Taylor has delivered a grim update on the horrifying assault outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue. The terrifying attack has left two men dead and three seriously injured.
Suspect’s Chilling Comeback
Police revealed the suspect, 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, was first spotted acting suspiciously near the synagogue. Security approached him, and he walked away unnoticed. “We don’t believe this was reported to police as he had already left the area,” Taylor said.
But, just 15 minutes later, Al-Shamie returned driving a vehicle and launched a brutal assault. Quick thinking from security staff, worshippers, and officers stopped him from entering the synagogue, despite a large crowd being inside.
Tragic Toll: Two Dead, Three in Critical Condition
- Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, died at the scene.
- Three other men remain critically injured in hospital.
Al-Shamie died on the spot. Police discovered a suspicious device strapped to his body, but confirmed it was a fake.
Suspect’s Troubled Past and Terror Links
Al-Shamie was unknown to Counter Terrorism Police before the attack but had a criminal record unrelated to terrorism. He was recently arrested for rape and released on bail.
Chief Taylor said: “We believe Al-Shamie may have been influenced by extreme Islamist ideology.” The full motive and details will take time to uncover.
Investigation Expands: More Arrests Made
Authorities have now arrested six suspects linked to terrorism offences, including one man and two women aged between 18 and their mid-40s. Warrants for further arrests are being sought.
“Please refrain from speculation or sharing unverified information,” Taylor warned. “This can delay our enquiries and cause further harm to victims and families.”
