Newcastle Star Joelinton Fined £29,000 for Drink Driving
Premier League Midfielder Caught Over the Limit
Newcastle midfielder Joelinton was stopped by police in the early hours of January 12 in Newcastle. The 26-year-old Brazilian failed a breathalyser test, blowing 43mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath—above the legal limit of 35mg.
Heavy Fine and Driving Ban
District Judge Paul Currer handed Joelinton a hefty £29,000 fine, based on his lucrative £43,000 weekly wage. The judge also banned him from driving for one year, with the suspension dropping to nine months if he completes a drink-driving rehab course.
- £29,000 fine
- One-year driving ban (reduced to nine months with rehab)
- £2,000 surcharge and £85 in court costs
Player Issues Public Apology
“You have cooperated fully. I am convinced you are truly sorry,” said Judge Currer during sentencing.
Joelinton expressed remorse after the hearing. He wrote: “I want to publicly apologise to all Newcastle fans and the people of this great city for making a mistake. Unintentionally, my actions put others at risk. I sincerely apologise and will take lessons from this incident to be a role model for my club, football, and society.”
