Just Stop Oil Founders Jailed Over M25 Chaos

Five Just Stop Oil protesters, including co-founder Roger Hallam, have been slammed with hefty prison sentences for causing massive chaos on the M25 motorway. Their protests triggered huge traffic snarls and racked up eye-watering economic costs.

Hallam Locked Up for Five Years

Roger Hallam, 58, was hit with a five-year prison sentence. His co-defendants Daniel Shaw, 38, Louise Lancaster, 58, Lucia Whittaker De Abreu, 35, and Cressida Gethin, 22, each got four years behind bars. The verdict was handed down on Thursday at Southwark Crown Court.

Drama on the M25: The Disruptive Details

  • The protests took place over four days in November 2022.
  • 45 activists climbed onto motorway gantries, halting traffic completely.
  • The economic damage was estimated at a staggering £765,000.
  • Metropolitan Police costs to manage the fiasco topped £1.1 million.
  • More than 50,000 hours of vehicle delays affected over 700,000 cars.
  • The M25 was crippled for more than 120 hours in total.

Prosecution Lifts Lid on Protest Planning

Prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward KC revealed the protests were meticulously planned. On November 2, 2022, the defendants hashed out their scheme during a Zoom call. A reporter from The Sun secretly recorded parts of the conversation and passed the evidence to police.

Judge Christopher Hehir slammed the organisers: “Each of you crossed the line from concerned campaigner to fanatic. You appointed yourselves as sole arbiters of what should be done about climate change.”

He warned Hallam directly: “You are the theoretician, the ‘ideas’ man. You sit at the very highest level of the conspiracy.”

Defiant Shouts and Furious Reactions

From the dock, Hallam and his fellow protesters, dubbed the “Whole Truth Five” by Just Stop Oil, shouted, “We love you” in a show of solidarity.

Outside, TV naturalist and climate supporter Chris Packham condemned the sentences as “judicial thuggery.” He blasted the courts for handing down disproportionate punishments to peaceful protesters in a world “on fire.”

Packham said: “A total disregard for any mitigating circumstances. Disproportionately high sentences for peaceful climate protesters.”

Political Leaders Respond to Fallout

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper voiced dismay at the unrest surrounding the trial. Councillor Salma Arif urged locals to stay home, while MP Richard Burgon warned residents to avoid the affected areas.

The trial has reignited debate on where to draw the line between the right to protest and public safety, especially when crucial infrastructure like motorways is at stake.

Warnings for Future Activists

Since November 2022, the M25 has been quiet — but these tough sentences send a chilling message to future activists. Despite the legal hammer, Just Stop Oil remains relentless, pushing for urgent climate action.
