Over 1,000 drivers caught drink and drug-driving in crackdown blitz

Zero tolerance on drug and drink drivers

Between 1 December 2023 and 1 January 2024, Kent Police’s Roads Policing Unit launched a tough national crackdown to slash deaths and serious injuries on the roads.

They stopped and breath-tested every driver caught committing a traffic offence—whether or not officers suspected drink or drug use.

Shocking haul of offenders caught red-handed

More than 1,000 vehicles were stopped during the campaign. Among the arrests:

  • A man nabbed for several driving offences was bailed after being arrested.
  • In Gillingham, a van driver caught without a seatbelt failed a roadside drug test and was bailed after arrest for drug-driving.
  • In Folkestone, a woman fleeing police was caught with cocaine, cannabis, and heroin after she tested positive for cocaine during a roadside check. She’s been bailed pending further investigation.

Police warn: Drink and drug driving still a deadly risk

“It is concerning that people are still driving when they are in no fit condition to get behind the wheel,” said Inspector Dave Crompton. “We take a zero-tolerance approach to drink and drug driving all year round.”

“These offences are among the top causes of serious collisions, alongside speeding, mobile phone use, and not wearing a seatbelt. The consequences can be life-changing for everyone involved.”

Officials urge drivers to stay safe and keep drugs and booze out of the driver’s seat. The message is clear: don’t risk it, or risk ruining lives.
