Chef Jailed for 22 Years Over Wife’s Murder and Disposal in Thames Suitcase
Aminan Rahman, 46, has been locked up for at least 22 years after strangling his 24-year-old wife, Suma Begum, and dumping her body in the River Thames. The gruesome killing happened after he found out about her affair on TikTok.
Horrific Murder Witnessed Live on Video Call
Rahman attacked Ms Begum at their Docklands flat in East London, in front of their two young children. Horrifyingly, her lover Shahin Miah, 24, watched the attack unfold over a video call. During the assault, Rahman shouted at Miah, “Because of you this has happened,” before packing Suma’s lifeless body into a suitcase and throwing it into the River Lea. It was found ten days later by mudlarks along the Thames.
Chilling Details from Court Hearing
The court revealed Rahman even took his two-year-old son with him when dumping the body. The toddler, unaware of what was happening, thought it was a game and snuggled under a blanket with his deceased mother. Rahman fled to Bournemouth after the murder, leaving his children with relatives, before being arrested.
Judge Mr Justice Bennathan described Suma as “a lively, attractive young woman and devoted mother” whose life was cruelly ended by Rahman’s actions.
Family Speaks Out and Legal Verdict
“Suma wanted to tell us about how Aminan was abusing her, but he threatened to kill her if she did. He has deprived their children of the childhood they should have had,” said Suma’s half-brother Abdul Amin.
The court heard Suma had moved to the UK in 2020 after an arranged marriage to Rahman. Their relationship broke down after she began openly documenting an affair with Shahin Miah on TikTok.
Rahman claimed he accidentally strangled his wife while trying to protect their kids. Despite this, he was found guilty of murder and assault, and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 22 years behind bars.
Detective Constable Karen Douglas condemned Rahman’s “cold and careless” actions and praised Suma’s bravery in coming forward. She urged victims of abuse to seek help, highlighting the importance of support for those trapped in domestic violence.
