UK’s First Ever Court Win Over Female Genital Mutilation Abroad
In a landmark legal breakthrough, a woman has been convicted for helping arrange female genital mutilation (FGM) overseas—the first time such a verdict has been secured in the UK.
Amina Noor Found Guilty at Old Bailey
Amina Noor, 39, was found guilty of aiding in mutilating the genitals of a UK girl while abroad. The chilling offence took place in Kenya back in 2006, when Noor travelled with the child. The verdict was handed down on October 26 at London’s Old Bailey after a two-week trial.
Long Investigation Triggered by Victim’s Disclosure
The case began after the victim bravely told a teacher about the abuse in November 2018. Police investigations uncovered Noor’s role in facilitating the procedure using false justifications like “Sunnah” and “Gudniin” – euphemisms for harmful cultural practices.
But medical experts shattered this defence. Their examination revealed severe mutilation causing intense pain and bleeding.
Police Send Strong Warning – Report FGM Now
“FGM is a barbaric, violent crime with lifelong consequences,” said Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, head of the Met’s Modern Slavery and Child Exploitation unit. “This conviction shows offenders won’t get away with it.”
He urged victims to come forward, promising anonymity and protection, and called on the public to dial 999 immediately if they suspect FGM is about to happen.
Concerns can also be reported to the NSPCC FGM Helpline at 0800 028 3550.
Victim’s Identity Shielded from Public View
To protect the victim, authorities have withheld Noor’s photo and address. UK laws ensure lifelong anonymity for FGM victims, encouraging more to step forward without fear.
This groundbreaking conviction signals a new era in the UK’s fight against FGM — making it clear that no one is above the law, no matter where the crime happens.
