A lorry driver is heading for trial in May after a crash on the M20 claimed the life of youth football coach Arran McManus. The fatal smash happened on November 25 during a 50mph speed limit.

Man Denies Causing Death by Dangerous Driving

Zvonko Tomisa, 57, from Vidovec, Croatia, appeared at Maidstone Crown Court and denied causing Arran’s death by dangerous driving. The collision involved Tomisa’s MAN lorry, a Scania articulated lorry, and a Nissan Qashqai. The crash took place on the London-bound carriageway between junctions 9 and 8 near Lenham.

Arran McManus, 36, from Ashford, was driving the Nissan and died at the scene. Described as a “pillar of the community,” his death has devastated family and friends.

Crash Rocks Busy M20 Amid Traffic Jam and Speed Limit

The prosecutor revealed the crash took place during a “three-lane traffic jam” caused by a separate earlier accident. A 50mph rolling speed restriction had been enforced miles before the collision.

Evidence for the trial will include tachograph data and mobile phone records. Tomisa, a professional truck driver, was travelling from Dover, though his final destination is undisclosed.

After pleading not guilty, Judge Julian Smith set the trial for May 18. Tomisa was remanded in custody, with a pre-trial review due on April 9.

Heartfelt Tributes Pour In for Beloved Dad and Coach

Arran’s partner, Ashleigh Devlin, paid an emotional tribute, calling him her “soulmate and best friend.” She said, “Arran was our whole life and more. He was the most wonderful dad to our two incredible children, and he was so proud of them both and loved them deeply.”

Kennington Juniors FC, where Arran coached, described him as “patient, thoughtful and inspiring” — a true mentor and leader. The club has launched a fundraiser to support his family.

Arran’s funeral is set for later this week, with many family members also expected at the upcoming court hearing.
