Drug Dealer Busted After Using His Dog’s Name as Encrypted Alias
Detectives cracked the case wide open when they discovered Nicholas Houtman had given himself the same alias as his pet on a secret criminal phone network. The dog’s name? ‘Capone’ – the very same handle Houtman used on his encrypted Encrochat device.
Encrypted Chats Reveal Massive Cocaine Operation
Police uncovered Houtman, 30, sending messages about huge hauls of “banging” cocaine – bulk buys weighing multiple kilos at a whopping £35,000 to £40,000 per kilo. The dealer pocketed £500 to £1,000 profit per deal by brokering drug sales across the country.
Investigators found the killer clue when they spotted his Encrochat password saved under the notes as “HOUTMANHOUTMAN”. Plus, his encrypted phone’s movements matched his regular mobile, tying him down beyond doubt.
Partners in Crime Also Snared
Bedfordshire Police’s Operation Costello revealed Houtman’s close ties with fellow drug dealer Jack Penman, 29, who’s already behind bars for similar offences. Their secret chats showed them swapping wholesale cocaine and running a large-scale supply ring.
11 Years for Houtman – Police Vow to Keep Cracking Down
On Tuesday, Houtman of Manor Road was jailed for 11 years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine.
“Houtman’s carelessness in using the same alias as his dog on Encrochat was just one part of the overwhelming evidence in this pawsome investigation,” said Investigation Officer Gary Hales.
“Over 52 days, he dealt 10 to 12 kilos of dangerous cocaine, flooding the streets with misery and criminal cash.
“He thought he was untouchable behind encrypted messages. We proved him wrong. No one is immune. We will relentlessly pursue organised criminals.”
