Lyneham Man Jailed for Raping Teen in Swindon Car Park
Brutal Attack in Swindon’s Old Town Car Park
A 23-year-old man from Lyneham has been found guilty of raping an 18-year-old in a chilling attack in a Swindon car park. Rooney Gardi, from Calne Road, Lyneham, struck in the early hours of June 30, 2024, at the Dammas Lane car park, Swindon Crown Court heard.
The victim was discovered unconscious by members of the public, with serious injuries to her face and body. She had no memory of the assault and was missing her underwear. Police and medical experts later conducted examinations to gather crucial evidence.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery and Public’s Quick Response
Detective Constable Anna McCormack of Wiltshire Police CID slammed Gardi as a “sexual predator” who preyed on a vulnerable young woman.
“Gardi admitted sexual contact but denied the more serious charge. He took advantage of a young girl who was vulnerable.”
DC McCormack applauded the victim’s courage throughout the investigation despite her trauma and memory loss.
“I also want to thank the members of the public and community wardens who found the victim. Their quick actions in calling police and securing the scene preserved vital evidence.”
Sentencing Set for April 14
Gardi remains in custody and will face sentencing on April 14. Authorities continue to stress the importance of community vigilance and support for victims.
Police Urge Sexual Assault Victims to Come Forward
DC McCormack reassured the public that Wiltshire Police take sexual violence seriously and urged anyone affected to seek help, even if they cannot recall all details.
“People should be able to enjoy a night out without fear. If you believe you’ve been sexually assaulted, we will investigate fully.”
