Elderly Man Brutally Punched in Street by Young Attacker
Jack Brooke unloaded a savage punch spree on an 81-year-old man at around 1.30pm on Thursday, 22 October. The two were walking alone near Bridge Foot when they crossed paths between St Marys Street and Miller Street.
As the victim tried to sidestep the 22-year-old, Brooke grabbed him, raised his fist, and struck him two or three times in the head. The blows sent the elderly man collapsing onto his knees. Brooke then casually walked off into the town centre.
Victim Suffers Lingering Injuries and Trauma
The victim only sought medical help days later at Warrington Hospital after enduring a bruised ear and recurring headaches. He then told his family about the shocking attack, who promptly contacted the police.
Police swiftly launched an investigation, appealing for public help. Several witnesses came forward, including a cyclist who rushed to the victim’s aid after the assault.
Attacker Caught and Sentenced for Violent Assault and Vandalism
Brooke was arrested at his home on 28 October and charged. At Warrington Magistrates Court on 24 February, he was sentenced to 18 weeks behind bars.
He also faced charges for criminal damage after smashing a property window on Whitefield Road in August. Brooke hurled a plant pot through the living room window, causing £2,500–£3,000 worth of damage.
Community Outraged, Police Praise Courage of Victim
“I will never understand why Brooke chose to repeatedly punch an elderly man who was simply walking past him on a street,” said Sergeant Chris Webster from Warrington Local Policing Unit.
“The attack has had a serious physical and mental impact on the victim and shocked the local community. Before this, he would enjoy worry-free long walks. I hope this doesn’t stop him.”
The victim revealed in court: “I still replay the attack over and over in my mind and suffer flashbacks of Brooke’s fists coming at me.”
David Keane, Cheshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, condemned the attack: “It’s despicable to target vulnerable people in our community. I hope the victim recovers and returns to his daily walks. Huge thanks to the public and officers who helped bring justice.”
