Man Jailed for Dousing Eight Police Officers in Petrol in Basildon Attack
A Basildon man has been locked up for nearly four years after hurling petrol over eight police officers, leaving two hospitalised. Justin Jackson, 28, was sentenced to three years and nine months at Basildon Crown Court on Thursday 7 November.
Dangerous Motorbike Ride Sparks Police Chase
The shocking attack followed a police pursuit on Sunday 5 May, after officers spotted a reckless motorbike performing wheelies and riding the wrong way down roads in Canvey. With helicopter support, officers tracked the rider back to Basildon. The teenager was arrested after officers armed with Tasers confronted him.
Petrol Attack During Arrest Shocks Essex Police
While making arrests linked to the incident, Jackson unleashed a terrifying assault. Armed with a red watering can filled with petrol, he sprinted towards officers from behind, dousing them in the flammable liquid. Two officers needed emergency hospital care, while six others received burn and eye treatments at the scene.
Miraculously, all eight officers were back on duty the same day.
“The events of that day will always remain with me,” said Superintendent Jonathan Baldwin, one of the victims. “It’s not just the physical pain – it’s the memory that stays with you every time you respond to an incident. What makes me proud is none of the officers took time off. They work for the public, no matter what.”
Chief Constable Praises Officers’ Bravery, Vows Justice
Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington slammed the attack as “horrendous” and praised the officers’ courage. He said:
“No officer should ever be attacked for doing their job. We will relentlessly pursue anyone who assaults police staff. Justin Jackson now faces justice, and we will continue supporting our officers through the emotional aftermath.”
