Firefighters race to tackle grass blaze on Dagenham Road amid London heatwave
London’s scorched summer heats up with a wild grass and scrub fire on Dagenham Road last night (Sunday 30 June). Fire crews scrambled as the capital faces soaring temperatures and sky-high wildfire risk.
Blaze brings out 25 firefighters and four engines
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) rushed four fire engines and around 25 firefighters to tackle the blaze. The first of 15 emergency calls came in at 7.59pm. Teams from Dagenham, Hornchurch, and Essex County Fire & Rescue battled flames until they finally brought the fire under control just before 9pm.
London Fire Brigade issues urgent heatwave warning
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson urged the public to stay vigilant:
“London is already facing its second heatwave of the year. High temperatures and low rainfall have pushed wildfire risk to severe levels.
“It only takes a few sparks to cause a fire to spread rapidly. Many green spaces lie close to homes and properties, putting lives at risk.”
LFB safety tips: How to avoid sparking a wildfire
Park-goers and residents must stay alert during the heatwave:
- Steer clear of disposable BBQs. These remain hot for hours and are banned in many parks.
- Don’t burn garden waste or start bonfires while conditions are dry.
- Make sure cigarettes are fully extinguished and dispose of litter responsibly.
- Use BBQs safely at home – keep them away from fences, trees, sheds, and decking. Never use on balconies.
This Dagenham Road fire is a stark reminder: dry weather can ignite dangerous blazes in minutes. Stay safe and think twice before lighting up.
