Man Jailed for Six Years After Deadly Bournemouth Punch
Carl Stuart Woolley, 33, has been locked up for six years after a brutal assault in Bournemouth left 59-year-old Stephen Jeffries fatally injured. Woolley, who has no fixed address, was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on 26 February 2021 after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
Deadly Punch Outside The Avenue Car Park
The shocking attack happened around 10pm on Sunday 13 September 2020 near The Avenue car park, at the junction of Avenue Road and Norwich Avenue. Police rushed to the scene after reports of an assault and found Mr Jeffries with a life-threatening head injury.
Earlier that evening, Mr Jeffries had a verbal row with a group near Flirt Café in The Triangle. When he walked away along Avenue Road, Woolley followed and punched him in the face. The blow caused Mr Jeffries to collapse unconscious.
Police Investigate as Victim Dies in Hospital
Officers sealed off the area to investigate the serious incident. At 6.10am the next morning, Woolley turned himself in at the police cordon, admitting responsibility. He was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.
Tragically, Mr Jeffries died in hospital on 15 September. Woolley was subsequently charged with murder but later pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Police and prosecutors accepted the plea, dropping the murder charge.
Family Speak Out: “A Life Taken Without Regard”
“The outcome will never be enough in terms of justice. The loss we feel as a family will never be justified. A life has been taken without regard,” said Mr Jeffries’ family.
“COVID-19 restrictions meant we couldn’t be there in court to face Woolley or hear his remorse. Stephen was a kind father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who loved life. He will be dearly missed.”
They also thanked hospital staff, homicide officers, and prosecution teams for their support.
Police Warn of Deadly Consequences of Violence
Detective Inspector Wayne Seymour from Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team said: “This tragic case highlights how one punch, like Woolley’s, can have deadly consequences. Violence is never tolerated in our communities.”
He added: “I hope today’s sentence brings some closure and is a stark reminder of the dangers of mindless violence.”
