Neighbour’s Hate Mail Nightmare Ends With Jail

A spiteful neighbour has been locked up for spewing hate and wrecking property over seven years. Johnathon Warner-Johnson, 52, from Beckenham, was sentenced to two years and four months in prison at Croydon Crown Court on Wednesday, 16 August, after admitting criminal damage and stalking charges.

Seven Years of Abuse

Between 2009 and 2016, Warner-Johnson bombarded a married couple on his street with more than 200 offensive letters. The vile missives accused the couple of paedophilia and cruelly attacked a family member with Down’s Syndrome, leaving the victims terrified and distressed.

Sabotage and Sneaky Lies

Warner-Johnson didn’t stop at letters. He vandalised both the couple’s car and their son’s vehicle, trashed their fence, and sprayed weed killer over their plants and lawn. To cover his tracks, he pretended to be a victim himself, sending fake hate letters supposedly from others. Shockingly, the couple confided in him, never suspecting he was the tormentor.

Caught on Camera and Brought to Justice

The police grew suspicious in 2016 when a letter showed handwriting matching the previous hate mail, containing details only Warner-Johnson knew. CCTV footage captured him dumping rubbish in the victim’s garden and spraying weed killer at dawn on 20 July 2016. He was arrested later that year and found with a stash of letters and address labels.

Detective Constable Liz Truan said: “Over a seven-year period, Warner-Johnson launched a calculated malicious campaign against his neighbours. His hate campaign brought significant alarm and distress to them over a prolonged period and it is right he has been jailed and handed such a long restraining order.”

Warner-Johnson must also pay nearly £2,000 in compensation and is subject to a 20-year restraining order, keeping him well away from his victims.
