Bristol Museum Heist: Thieves Swipe 600 Priceless Empire Artefacts in Dead of Night
Daring Raid Strikes at Heart of Bristol’s History
A brazen gang smashed into Bristol Museum’s British Empire and Commonwealth collection building on Cumberland Road between 1am and 2am on 25th September. In a lightning raid, they made off with over 600 priceless artefacts, ripping a huge hole in the city’s cultural heritage.
Detectives have now released CCTV footage showing four suspects they desperately want to catch. The stolen haul includes photographs, papers, and souvenirs showcasing Britain’s colonial past — a unique, irreplaceable glimpse into history.
Desperate Hunt for Suspects with Distinctive Looks
Police are urging the public to identify the four white men caught on camera. Here’s what officers have revealed about the culprits:
- First suspect: Medium to stocky build, wearing a white cap, black jacket, light trousers, and black trainers.
- Second suspect: Slimmer figure, dressed in a grey hooded jacket, black trousers, and black trainers.
- Third suspect: Green cap, black jacket, light shorts, white trainers — notable limp on right leg.
- Fourth suspect: Large build, rocking a distinctive two-tone orange and navy puffed jacket, black trousers, and black-and-white trainers.
That flashy orange and navy jacket could be the break the investigation needs.
‘Significant Loss’ to Bristol’s Cultural Legacy
Detective Constable Dan Burgan slammed the theft as a “significant loss for the city”. Many of the items were museum donations, offering vital insights into a complex British history.
“These items… form part of a collection that provides insight into a multi-layered part of British history, and we hope the public can help us bring those responsible to justice,” DC Burgan said.
Police have scoured CCTV, conducted forensic tests, and interviewed witnesses — but now need locals to come forward with any info to crack the case wide open.
Spike in Area Burglaries Raises Alarm
The raid comes amid a crime wave hitting the area, with Avon and Somerset Police logging 47 burglaries in the last year—nearly one a week. With the museum targeted, locals fear the area has become a hotspot for thieves and gangs.
