Brighton Thug Jailed for Savage Midnight Attack
Five-and-a-Half Years Behind Bars
Anthony Grist, 46, from Margaret Street, Brighton, has been locked up for five-and-a-half years after a brutal assault. The Lewes Crown Court jury found him guilty of wounding with intent following a six-day trial that started on December 12. The unanimous verdict was handed down on December 19.
Unprovoked Attack After Band Practice
On the night of May 20, just before midnight, Grist viciously attacked a 34-year-old man walking home from band practice on Beaconsfield Road. The victim suffered serious head and leg lacerations that needed surgery but has since made a recovery.
Swift Police Work Leads to Arrest
- Police conducted door-to-door inquiries and analysed CCTV footage.
- Grist was arrested early the next morning, May 21.
- Forensic tests on a blood-stained jacket and boots matched the victim’s DNA to Grist.
- Despite pleading not guilty, the jury delivered a guilty verdict after four hours of deliberation.
Police Praise Victim and Public Help
“This was an unprovoked attack the victim called ‘savage’. Grist repeatedly kicked and stamped on him while he was helpless,” said crime investigator Rose Horan. “Judge Mercer described the assault as brutal, warning it could have ended in murder had it gone on longer.”
“We salute the victim’s bravery and thank the public who raised the alarm and gave evidence. Our thorough response meant this violent offender was swiftly caught and is now off the streets.”
