Ten Years On, Police Renew Plea for Murder Suspect to Face Justice
A full decade has passed since Norwegian student Martine Vik Magnussen was murdered in London – and police are still hunting the man wanted for her death. Detectives have urged Farouk Abdulhak, the prime suspect, to return to the UK and answer for the crime.
Martine’s Tragic Last Night Caught on CCTV
On 14 March 2008, 23-year-old Martine was spotted on CCTV leaving the Maddox nightclub in Mayfair with Abdulhak. The footage shows Martine celebrating the end of her term exams, looking happy and carefree.
The following day, friends reported her missing. Police soon found her partially hidden under rubble in a basement flat on Great Portland Street, Westminster. The post-mortem revealed she died from neck compression and had been raped.
Suspect Fled UK – Still at Large
Farouk Abdulhak vanished to Yemen hours after Martine’s disappearance and has refused all calls to come back. Despite repeated appeals and efforts by detectives over the past decade, he remains protected abroad and has avoided justice.
“A decade on and our ambition remains the same – to obtain justice for Martine,” said Detective Chief Inspector Andy Partridge of the Homicide and Major Crime Command.
“This CCTV footage is a reminder that we will not forget this case – or the man responsible.”
Family Demand Justice on 10th Anniversary
Martine’s father, Petter Magnussen, is in London to mark the somber anniversary. For the first time ever, Petter will deliver a live statement through the Metropolitan Police’s Facebook and Instagram channels.
Later, he will lay flowers at the spot on Great Portland Street where his daughter’s body was discovered.
