Martial arts fighter handed suspended sentence after brutal pub punch leaves man with brain bleed in Nottingham
Unprovoked Attack in Pub Beer Garden
Kanan Scotney, 30, landed a savage punch in a Nottingham beer garden that left a vulnerable man fighting for his life. The shocking attack happened on August 16, 2023, at around 10.30pm on St James’s Street. Scotney struck the victim once in the face, sending him crashing backwards onto a table before he hit the floor.
Shocking details reveal Scotney fled the scene without checking on his victim, only to return later hunting for a lost bracelet.
Victim Rushed to Hospital with Brain Bleed
The victim, already battling a serious health condition, suffered a dangerous brain bleed from the fall. Medics warned the injury could be life-changing given his fragile state.
16-Month Sentence Suspended for Two Years
Scotney, of Hereford Road, Nottingham, admitted to inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent. On October 8, Nottingham Crown Court sentenced him to 16 months behind bars – but suspended for two years.
Police Warn: Night-time Violence Will Not Be Tolerated
Detective Sergeant Simon Carter of Nottinghamshire Police said: “Scotney may not have been intending to cause the injuries he did but is a powerfully built man who is trained in martial arts. Just one punch can become a life-changing event for both the offender and the victim.”
He added: “Violence like this, especially in the night-time economy, will always be met with a robust response from the force.”
