Man Charged After Shocking Attempted Robbery on Elderly Couple in Southsea

A 22-year-old man has been slapped with charges after trying to rob an elderly couple at their home in Southsea.

Attack on 91-Year-Old Man and 87-Year-Old Woman

Matthew James Smith, from Milton Road, Portsmouth, launched the brazen attempt on Sunday, 27 September, between 6pm and 6.20pm on Orchard Road.

The vulnerable couple – a 91-year-old man and an 87-year-old woman – were assaulted during the shocking incident. Luckily, nothing was stolen.

Smith was charged on 29 September and thrown into custody. He appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates Court yesterday and remains behind bars.

His next court date is set for 2 November at Portsmouth Crown Court as the case moves forward.
