Winter Drink-Drive Crackdown Nets Delivery Driver, Plumber, Broker in Sussex

A delivery driver, plumber, and financial stockbroker are among the latest Sussex motorists nailed for drink-driving during a tough winter crackdown.

Operation Limit Sees 233 Arrested Across Sussex

Last month, Sussex police stepped up patrols as part of the nationwide Operation Limit campaign. They arrested 233 drivers caught driving under the influence. The names of those convicted and disqualified have been published to warn others about the dangers and costs of drink-driving.

“Our officers are determined to catch offenders on our roads before they cause serious harm to themselves or other road users,” said Roads Policing Unit Superintendent Rachel Glenton.

“We patrol the county’s roads 24/7, every day of the year, and these results show that while we can’t be everywhere, we could be anywhere.”

Sussex Drink-Drivers Slapped with Bans and Fines

  • Nigel Changambi, 25, removals operative from Crawley, was stopped on Wimblehurst Road on December 18 after trying to hide a bottle from officers. His breath test showed 45mcg of alcohol per 100ml – over the limit. He admitted driving without valid insurance and disqualified for a year, plus £165 in fines and costs.
  • Kym Debelle, 29, gardener from Tangmere, was caught moving his car in Chichester. He blew 81mcg at the roadside but then refused a breath sample in custody, claiming: “I am playing a game.” Debelle got a three-year ban and 200 hours of unpaid work, alongside fines and court costs.
  • Lenny Kerkhove, 29, a financial insurance broker from Shoreham, crashed into a building in Southwick after leaving a pub. He tested positive for 52mcg. Kerkhove was banned for 14 months and fined over £650 with costs.
  • Stephen Burden, 30, a computer engineer from Brighton, had three pints before driving in Chichester. He blew 97mcg but refused to provide a custody breath sample. Burden received a 22-month ban and nearly £1,500 in fines and costs.

Police Send Brutal Warning to Drink-Drivers

With the cold months demanding vigilance on Sussex roads, officers are relentless in hunting down offenders. This crackdown sends a stark warning: drink-driving won’t be tolerated. The hefty bans and fines show the serious consequences of taking to the wheel after a drink.
