High-Speed Moped Chase Ends with Thief Busted by Police Dog
A 23-year-old motorbike thief has been locked up for 44 weeks after a reckless chase through Maidstone. Daniel Tolhurst, from Coxheath, was caught thanks to a sharp police dog named Boss.
Wild Ride Through Maidstone Streets
The drama kicked off early on Monday, November 11, when police on patrol spotted suspicious riders around 5am in Coxheath. Soon, officers spotted Tolhurst zooming on a stolen moped along Calder Road. Ignoring stop orders, he weaved dangerously through busy traffic before ditching the bike on Gabriel’s Hill and making a run for it on foot.
But Police Dog Boss was on his tail. The canine quickly tracked Tolhurst down, leading to his arrest. Nearby, officers found a balaclava, hammers, and a wrench – tools clearly meant for more crime.

Tolhurst pleaded guilty at Medway Magistrates’ Court on November 13. He was sentenced to 44 weeks in jail, banned from driving for a year, and ordered to pay over £250 in costs and victim surcharge.
Police Praise Quick Response and Warn Residents
“Following a spate of motorcycle thefts, our officers have been patrolling high-risk areas,” said Chief Inspector Mark McLellan of Maidstone Police. “Tolhurst’s tools and balaclava showed he planned further crime. We’re glad to have caught him and returned the stolen moped to its owner.”
“Offenders like Tolhurst target hardworking residents, but swift justice is being served,” he added.
