Deadly Prison Brawl at HMP Belmarsh Sparks Murder Probe
Inmate Dies After Brutal Assault
Police launched a murder investigation after a prisoner at HMP Belmarsh suffered fatal head injuries in a shocking attack. Officers were called to the prison in SE28 at 8pm on Tuesday, 18 February, following reports of a violent assault inside the high-security jail.
The victim, a 36-year-old man, was rushed to hospital in critical condition but tragically died the following evening, Wednesday, 19 February. His family have been informed.
Two Fellow Prisoners Arrested on Suspicion of Attempted Murder
Two 28-year-old inmates were arrested at the scene and remain in custody as the investigation unfolds. Both face attempted murder charges while detectives dig deeper into the violent incident.
Met Police Lead Rigorous Inquiry
The Met’s Specialist Crime Division, under Detective Chief Inspector Richard Leonard, is spearheading the probe. DCI Leonard said:
“We are working to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident with the support of SERCO and local officers. At this stage I am open minded concerning motive, but expect this to become clear as the investigation progresses.”
A post-mortem will be carried out in due course as detectives piece together what sparked the deadly brawl inside one of Britain’s toughest prisons.
