Salt Shocker: Sprinkle Less, Dodge Diabetes!
A blockbuster new study from Tulane University warns that reaching for the salt shaker could be stirring up more than flavour — it might be pushing you closer to Type 2 diabetes.
Salt and Diabetes: The Risky Link
The massive study tracked over 400,000 UK adults for nearly 12 years, digging into their salt habits. The verdict? Those who habitually added salt to their meals faced a sharp rise in diabetes risk. Here’s the breakdown:
- Sometimes adding salt = 13% higher risk
- Usually adding salt = 20% higher risk
- Always adding salt = a whopping 39% higher risk
Over 13,000 participants developed Type 2 diabetes in that time.
Why the Salt Link?
Lead researcher Dr. Lu Qi, a top professor at Tulane, explained: “We already know cutting salt lowers heart disease risk. Now, we see ditching the saltshaker could also help stop diabetes in its tracks.”
Dr. Qi suspects salt might make people eat more food, driving up obesity and inflammation — classic diabetes triggers. The study also tied heavy salt use to higher BMI and a bigger waist-to-hip ratio.
Cut the Salt, Save Your Health
While more research is needed, Dr. Qi urges folks to swap high-sodium seasonings for healthier options now. “It’s a small change with huge benefits,” he said.
So next time you’re tempted to shake on extra salt, think twice — your health could depend on it!
