Police Impersonation Scam Hits Scarborough and Filey

Four separate scams struck Scarborough and Filey on Monday 22 March 2022, targeting elderly residents aged from their mid-70s to early 90s. The fraudsters pretended to be police officers from “Hammersmith Police,” “The Met,” or “Scotland Yard,” using fake names like “Superintendent Shelby,” “DCI James Hardwire,” “Sergeant Fisher,” and “PC Ryan.”

Thousands Stolen from Vulnerable Victims

Two victims handed over bank details and lost thousands of pounds. Their banks have been alerted to the fraud. In a separate incident on Thursday 24 March, a woman in her 80s was conned into transferring a large sum to criminals’ accounts.

Classic Scam Tactics: ‘Grandchild Emergency’ Excuse

North Yorkshire Police explained: “Victims are told to say the money is for a grandchild who urgently needs help if questioned by bank staff. They believe they’re talking to real officers and are totally fooled by the con. Fraudsters even claim bank staff are ‘in on it’ to make the transfer seem legit.”

Police Warn the Public and Banks to Stay Alert

Andy Fox, Financial Abuse Safeguarding Officer, said: “This scam has been seen for years but still fools people because the crooks are so convincing. They use multiple fake officer callers to reassure victims. Remember, police or banks will never call to ask for your banking details or tell you to move money. If they do, hang up immediately.”

Authorities urge elderly residents and their families to be extra vigilant, especially coastal banks and building societies, to spot and stop these cruel scams.
