Repeat Burglar Locked Up After Private Prosecution

David Hanson, a notorious career criminal with 105 prior convictions, has become the first person jailed following a private prosecution. The 44-year-old was caught red-handed breaking into a Marks & Spencer in Streatham Hill, nicking £500 worth of steaks and prosecco.

Police Pass, Private Firm Steps In

Despite the store manager’s quick action and CCTV footage, the Met Police declined to pursue the case. That’s when TM Eye, a private policing firm led by ex-Scotland Yard detective David McKelvey, took over. They work undercover and in uniform, and have already prosecuted 280 shoplifters.

Thief’s Rap Sheet Includes 33 Burglaries

Hanson’s previous crimes include 33 burglaries. He was caught on camera smashing a glass window to get inside. After TM Eye’s investigation, he was sentenced to a year in jail for four burglaries and assaulting an M&S employee during the theft.

Shoplifting Surges as Police Change Tack

McKelvey slammed recent police changes that limit action on shoplifting unless violence is involved or suspects are caught in the act. Shoplifting offences hit a record 430,104 last year, according to ONS data.

Retailers are forced into extreme measures like locking up chocolate bars and tight security entry, as the shoplifting crisis spirals out of control. With police stretched thin and rising crime, private prosecutions could become the new frontline in the fight against thieves.
