Shoplifting Spree Busted in Sittingbourne and Rainham
Kent Police are cracking down hard on a string of thefts targeting local shops and businesses. Between 12 and 29 October 2023, six thefts were reported at stores in Sittingbourne town centre with stolen goods worth over £400. Robert Smith, 39, of College Road, Sittingbourne, was arrested and charged with six counts of theft by the Swale Victim Based Crime Team on 6 November.
Spirit Heist Hits Rainham Shopping Centre
Meanwhile, just days later, five thefts reported at 1 in the Rainham Shopping Centre between 30 October and 3 November involved stolen bottles of spirits valued around £160. Lewis O’Brien, 33, from High Street, Chatham, was arrested and charged with five counts of theft by the Medway Victim Based Crime Team.
Court Showdown: Guilty Plea and Prison Recall
- Both Smith and O’Brien appeared before Medway Magistrates on 7 November.
- Smith was conditionally bailed to appear again on 24 November.
- O’Brien pleaded guilty to all charges and was recalled to prison.
- He must also pay £165 in compensation.
The police crackdown sends a clear message: shoplifting won’t be tolerated in Kent’s towns.
