Hijacked Atlanta Bus Sparks High-Speed Police Chase and Deadly Shooting
Gunman Hijacks Commuter Bus During Rush Hour
Chaos hit Atlanta Tuesday afternoon when a hijacked Gwinnett County Transit bus tore through rush hour traffic, triggering a harrowing police pursuit from downtown Atlanta into the suburbs. The drama began just after 4:30 p.m. following reports of gunfire and a hostage situation onboard.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum told reporters: “Our initial call was of a gunman on the bus, holding hostages, and possibly a discharged weapon.” News helicopters captured footage of the bus careening wildly and crashing into several vehicles while fleeing police.
Armed Felon Forces Driver to Flee
An officer reached the scene within a minute of the 911 call. The suspect, 39-year-old Joseph Grier, a convicted felon with 19 previous arrests, forced the driver to keep moving. Armed with a handgun, Grier sparked the high-speed chase that lasted miles, ending only after the bus was stopped in DeKalb County.
Authorities revealed 17 people were onboard during the ordeal, including the driver. Terror struck when one passenger was fatally shot. Miraculously, no other injuries to passengers or the driver were reported.
Victim Dead as Police Bring Chase to a Close
The chase ended when an armoured SWAT vehicle boxed in the bus, forcing it off the road. The bus’s digital sign still flashed “EMERGENCY” and “CALL POLICE 911” as police moved in.
One passenger lost her life to an apparent gunshot wound. Meanwhile, a 911 call from inside the bus remained open throughout the pursuit, providing officers with crucial information that helped bring the hostage situation to a close.
Relatives and Officials React
John Gilbert from nearby Dacula shared his shock as his wife Paulette, a regular bus rider, was among the terrified passengers. “I felt like I had a hole in me,” he said tearfully. “I’m just glad she’s alright.”
Meanwhile, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens condemned the day’s gun violence. “Today has been a very active day… too many people having guns in their hands,” he said, stressing that mental health issues might factor but the primary problem is widespread gun access.
Investigation Ongoing
Officials continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the hijacking and fatal shooting. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist with the inquiry.
