Gillingham Man Jailed for 22 Years Over Shocking Child Sex Crimes

Jonathan Richards has been sentenced to 22 years behind bars for horrific sexual assaults on two children in Gillingham, dating back 15 years. The 36-year-old from Britton Street was found guilty of raping a child, indecency, sexual assault, and forcing children into sexual activity at a Maidstone Crown Court trial in January 2019.

Denial Falls Flat as Jury Convicts

Richards vehemently denied all charges but was convicted on every count after a lengthy trial. He finally faced justice on Monday 29 April 2019, when the sentence was handed down.

Detective Praises Victims’ Bravery Amidst Trauma

“Richards subjected each child to horrific and degrading sexual abuse, and they are still processing the trauma to this day,” said Detective Constable Shaun Ravate, who led the investigation.

“Despite his depraved acts, Richards forced the victims to endure the torment of a trial. It took huge courage for these two victims to speak out, and I commend their bravery. Thanks to them, Richards is now safely behind bars, unable to do more harm.”

“Even though many years have passed since the offences, they remain deeply serious and traumatic. We urge anyone affected by sexual abuse to come forward for support and legal action.”

NSPCC Urges Victims to Speak Out — It’s Never Too Late

An NSPCC spokesperson added: “Child sexual abuse leaves enduring scars that can affect victims well into adulthood. But as this case shows, it is never too late to report abuse.

“Speaking out brings justice and opens doors to professional support, helping victims break free from the mental and emotional torment endured in silence. Over time, survivors can heal and live full, normal lives.”
